Snowboarding is an adventurous sport that originated in the 1960's in the United States. It was in the 1970's and 1980's that snowboarding turned out to be a favorite sport of many adventure lovers. It was after the innovation of boards that snowboarding became a Winter Olympic Sport in 1998.
Snowboarding is a recreational activity that is inspired by other thrilling sports like sledding, skateboarding, surfing and skiing. This activity involves descending a snow covered slope. Special boots set on mounted binding are worn by the rider to descend a snowy slope. Since the development of snowboarding as a winter sport, various contests are held in different parts of the world that includes Shakedown, the Air & Style, Burton Global Open Series, the X-Trail Jam and the X Games.
Varied styles are practiced by snowboard riders for enjoying snowboarding. Some of the commonly practiced styles comprise freestyle, free-ride, and free-carve/race. Each style is different from the other and requires a specialized technique and equipment. Jibbing is the most popular freestyle snowboarding in which a rider rides over surfaces such as metal rails, boxes, concrete ledges, benches, rocks, walls, and logs.
Another style of snowboarding is free-ride style. This style is also famous with the name of "all-mountain snow boarding". In this "all-mountain snow boarding", a rider rides down on any available terrain. A rider performing free-ride snowboarding must have the abilities to carve, ride, and jump. Apart from this, free-carving (race and slalom focused style) is also practiced by riders to great extent. This style is similar to skiing and is performed on hard packed snow or groomed runs. In free-carving style, a rider focuses on carving turn with the usage of ski-like hard shell boot and plate binding system along with a stiff and narrow directional snowboard.
