Paragliding is both a recreational as well as competitive sport. A paraglider is a portable foot-launched glider which can be carried easily whether one is traveling on a car or on public transport. The benefit of this portability is that it makes it easy for the paragliding enthusiasts to find a suitable take off spot, along with landing place and planning the return travel.
While paragliding, a pilot sits in a harness which is suspended below a hollow fabric, the shape of this fabric is formed by the suspension lines along with the air entering vents through front of the wing. A paraglider does not use an engine, but still, the paraglider flights can last for hours and allow one to travel hundreds of kilometers.
Another similar sport is powered paragliding in which paragliders are flown with a small engine attached. Hang gliding is also a related adventure sport, and though the equipment used is quite different in both sports, but some pilots are involved in both of them.
The pilots who are involved in paragliding professionally participate in various events, such as Cross-country leagues, Accuracy, "Acro" or aero-acrobatic maneuvers, and National/international records. The pilots who participate in competitive flying use high performance wings which are more responsive and provide better feedback to them. All these competitions are tough in their own way, for instance, Accuracy involves spot landing competitions requiring the pilots to skillfully land on assigned targets which have a 3 cm center spot to a 10 meter circle.
